Use the Gym to Make New Friends
As I’ve mentioned before, making friends after a move is one of the toughest and most important things you need to do to settle in and feel at home.
There are many ways to start a new network, and I want to take a moment in this article to focus on the gym as one resource you can use. Classes (gym and other), generally speaking, are an excellent resource because you’re able to surround yourself with people who share the same interest, or are bonded by a similar situation or struggle, that’s an instant conversation starter. Especially if you tend to be on the shy side, getting yourself into groups, clubs, organizations, and classes where people share your interests means that you’ll have a much easier time thinking of something to say to someone in the room, striking up a conversation, and hopefully starting a new friendship!
So here are a few things I’d like to point out about why the gym is a great place to spend some time developing friendships:
The gym allows you the opportunity of attending the same class on a regular basis, and coming into contact with the same people over and over again.
The more frequently you see the same people, the more comfortable you will be with approaching them to start a conversation, and you’ll have a sense of being recognized which goes a long way towards feeling more confident
It’s naturally to feel shy or awkward when you attend an event, or a one-time class. The gym sets the stage for you to be in the same settings, with the same people, and being comfortable and familiar with your surroundings is a great way to combat shyness!
